Single leg work should be a part of every single strength program. Almost everything we do on a daily basis is single leg based. Getting in and out of a car, walking, running and going up and down the stairs is all single leg based. It requires balance, co-ordination and an element of strength to continuously do them without injury.
A Single Leg Romanian Deadlift (SL RDL) is an excellent single leg exercise but as with all single leg exercises balance can be a limiting factor in executing it correctly and effectively.
Watch the video below to see the exercise performed and some tips to maintain balance.
A more efficient way to hit a single leg is to use a Split Stance RDL. The split stance still allows for emphasis on one leg but with both feet in contact with the floor the balance element is taken away to a great extent. This can lead to a heavier weight being used and greater gains in strength without the risk of falling over and potential injury and ego bruising.
Check out the Split Stance RDL in the video below.
The point is there needs to be a balance (pun intended) between an exercises do-ability and providing enough of a challange to elicit the changes we desire no matter what they are.
If balance stops you from executing a single leg exercise then seek a variation that helps to maintain balance while still being effective for the chosen muscle groups.
