Belt Squats are a pretty common exercise station in most commercial gyms. They load the weight onto the hips via a belt and chain instead of the spine. They are an awesome exercise for people that may not want to or be able to load a heavy barbell on their back or hold a heavy dumbbell at their chest.
Here’s a video of Squat University’s Dr. Aaron Horschig explain why he thinks it’s awesome too:
Unfortunately, I don’t have a large enough facility to fit a single use piece of equipment in my own gym. But when my client Aisling decided to break her shoulder by falling off a mountain bike….while cycling down a mountain, I needed to provide a way to help her continue to strength train her legs WITHOUT the ability to hold or grip weights with both hands.
That’s where the Landmine Belt Squat comes in.
The barbell in anchored on one end and weight plates added to the other end. This is then elevated on a small step to ensure Aisling can achieve decent range of motion. In other words she won’t get low enough as the weights will hit the floor. We elevated her too! Standing on plates allows her to loop the chain under the bar easily.
