Fat Shaming – My Thoughts

Fat shaming is the process where one person makes another person feel ashamed about their body shape and size by using derogatory language or discriminatory behaviours towards them.

Here are my thoughts on fat shaming.

If you are overweight, are happy and have no health issues related to being overweight then good for you.

If you are overweight but are not happy and/or your health suffers as a result then you need to make some changes to your lifestyle and nutrition habits.

Being overweight or obese has serious health implications. There is no denying that fact. You are more likely to die at a younger age from preventable diseases if you are overweight or obese.

If a friend comments on you gaining weight are they fat shaming or concerned?

If you feel ashamed that they even asked are you already ashamed of the fact you gained a few pounds and just blaming them.

Sometimes the truth hurts. Just because you dont like it doesnt make it less true.

Is it discrimination towards smokers that we passed a law to make them smoke outside in the cold and put pictures of decaying lungs on the packets? Or is it in an effort to improve the health of non-smokers and encourage people to quit to benefit their health.

Imagine if we did the same for overweight people and junk food!!

Put pictures of overweight people on Mars bars and force Mary in the office to eat her crisps outside with the smokers so people eating healthier foods aren’t tempted to pick.

Should people with excess body fat be bullied or discriminated against?

No. Nobody should.

Should an overweight person feel ashamed about how they look and feel because of someone else opinion of them?

That’s up to them.

In my experience the majority of people that lack body confidence are overweight. The few that say they are confident in their body will never be caught dead in a swimsuit so it doesn’t add up.

I know very few people that are overweight or obese that are truly unflinching in their confidence and care not what someone else or society thinks.

Is your self-worth tied up in how you look?

No fucking way.

CAN it be tied up in how you look and feel about it?

Absolutely!

Is it ok for someone to make fun of you or treat you differently because of your weight?

No fucking way.

Bottom line:

1. If you are unhappy with how you look and feel you have 2 choices. You can do something about it or do nothing about it and cry victim.

2. Dont be a dickhead to anyone because if how they look.

PS – If you are being bullied or discriminated against then you are a victim and its perfectly justified to feel that way and seek help but doing nothing to remedy the situation benefits nobody.
